About the position

The Lead Electrical Engineer position involves applying expertise in protective relaying and control systems for high voltage (HV) and extra high voltage (EHV) substations. As a Project Lead, you will oversee an engineering and design team, focusing on substation modifications and upgrades to meet client requirements. Responsibilities include preparing relaying philosophies, developing SCADA and telecommunication concepts, and guiding junior engineers in protection and controls engineering design efforts. The role also entails troubleshooting engineering issues, performing design analysis, and coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure timely project delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Lead an engineering and design team for substation modifications and upgrades.
  • Prepare relaying philosophies and select appropriate relay, control, and communications equipment.
  • Develop SCADA and telecommunication concepts and configurations.
  • Oversee preparation of I/O assignments and connection diagrams.
  • Guide junior and senior engineers in protection and controls engineering design efforts.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and solve engineering issues.
  • Perform analysis and design of single line diagrams and substation relaying & metering diagrams.
  • Prepare engineering studies for client and peer review.
  • Conduct independent reviews of calculations and drawing preparations.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, clients, and suppliers for project completion.
  • Review existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, presenting findings to clients.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and share knowledge through peer-learning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with a power systems or controls emphasis from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 10 or more years of experience in protection, control, and telecommunications for high voltage substations.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience as a firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role.
  • Experience in writing and providing support documentation for relay calculations.
  • Proficiency in design techniques, tools, and principles for technical plans and drawings.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.
  • Experience with vendor protective relay equipment used in substation protection.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with in-line, bus and equipment protection, and control systems.
  • Familiarity with RTU and data concentrator based SCADA systems.
  • Experience with telemetering and communications systems.
  • AutoCAD or MicroStation experience.
  • Construction and start-up experience.
  • Testing or commissioning experience.
