About the position

The Lead Engineer, Digital Products will spearhead Audubon's initiatives to develop and maintain digital products, particularly focusing on mapping and data visualizations. This role involves collaboration with various teams to create engaging user experiences that utilize bird information and scientific data, supporting strategic initiatives and captivating audiences interested in avian topics. The position offers flexibility with options for hybrid work in New York or Washington, D.C., or fully remote within the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with product managers, designers, cartographers, and scientists to build engaging digital products.
  • Develop applications focusing on responsive mapping and data visualization features.
  • Oversee the maintenance and feature iteration of the Bird Migration Explorer tool.
  • Solve complex interface challenges with clean, performant code for visualizations and maps.
  • Write and maintain documentation for existing applications and visualizations.
  • Create functional specifications for planned work, including data services specifications.
  • Troubleshoot issues, fix bugs, and make iterative improvements to applications post-launch.
  • Stay updated with the latest in mapping, GIS, and data visualization frameworks.
  • Ensure equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging principles are integrated into all work.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience as a product engineer or in similar roles with increasing responsibility.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of experience developing responsive front-end applications with a focus on mapping and data visualization.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and at least one modern JavaScript framework, preferably React.
  • Familiarity with geospatial data formats and mapping toolkits such as GeoJSON, Shapefiles, ArcGIS, Leaflet, and Mapbox.
  • Strong understanding of optimizing complex web applications for performance across browsers and devices.
  • High degree of self-organization and ability to define efficient workflows independently.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially in translating technical concepts for non-technical audiences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS is a huge plus.
