About the position

As a Lead Engineer of Electric Power Systems at GE Vernova Advanced Research, you will play a crucial role in the development of advanced electrical power and energy systems primarily for utility applications. This position involves collaborating with various GE businesses and technology partners to drive innovation in the energy sector, focusing on the integration of renewable energy technologies and enhancing the reliability and efficiency of power generation, transmission, and distribution systems.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of new technologies and capabilities for GE's power generation, transmission, distribution and end-user product offerings.
  • Develop algorithms to aggregate distributed energy resources (DERs) for grid services in microgrid or virtual power plant configurations.
  • Assess the impact of DERs on the grid and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Adapt distribution automation and management systems for operation with DERs.
  • Develop electrical system requirements for projects related to power electronics, electrical machines, and energy storage systems.
  • Join multi-disciplinary project teams and provide power system analysis expertise in various areas such as real-time modeling and simulation.
  • Perform analytical work to define and meet customer entitlements.
  • Contribute to the identification of technology, product, and service opportunities.
  • Effectively communicate results through written reports and presentations.
  • Connect the organization to the latest technology developments and trends.

Requirements

  • Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 2 years of experience in electric power systems or related field, or a Master's Degree with a minimum of 6 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated power system engineering experience in at least two of the following areas: power system impact of renewable energy systems, network modeling, protection and stability, transmission or distribution system planning and optimization, system integration of electric power, control and communication technologies.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance; prerequisite is U.S. citizenship.
  • Willingness to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with microgrid control.
  • Experience with power electronics based distributed generation and energy storage.
  • Experience with cybersecurity in power and energy applications.
  • Project experience and publications as the lead author in virtual power plant modeling, simulation, optimization and control.
  • Extensive experience with distribution simulation software such as OpenDSS, GridLAB-D or cymdist.
  • Experience with implementation of control algorithms in a field or lab hardware in the loop environment.
  • Experience in control theory with a focus on control algorithms for power or energy systems.
  • Detailed understanding of generator excitation and speed controls.
  • Experience with alternative energy and distributed generation, e.g., wind, PV, fuel cells.
  • Experience in writing government proposals for research grants.
  • Familiarity with power systems analytical tools, such as PSCAD, EMTP, PSS/E, PSLF, MAPS.
