About the position

Lead Engineers at National Grid are crucial for ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of electric transmission and distribution systems. This role involves developing standards, designing control systems, managing assets, and integrating new technologies. Lead Engineers collaborate across various departments to support the construction, maintenance, and operation of electrical systems, contributing to strategic business objectives and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and contribute to the development of National Grid's Substation Engineering and Design philosophy, standards, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Provide technical support to various departments including Engineering, Design, Operations, IT, and Construction.
  • Review technical documents such as single lines, elementaries, physicals, and manufacturers' drawings.
  • Research and support the adoption of new technologies for the substation business.
  • Develop technical content and implementation of National Grid's Transmission Engineering and Design philosophy and standards.
  • Investigate equipment problems and failures with manufacturers and vendors, providing recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Assess the performance of the sub-Transmission and Distribution system and develop modernization plans.
  • Conduct area studies and develop long-term integrated plans for infrastructure development.
  • Provide technical support for the application, operation, and maintenance of the electric transmission and distribution system.
  • Evaluate co-generation interconnection requests and develop connection plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil/Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited school.
  • Minimum 10+ years relevant engineering experience in transmission, distribution, or substation engineering.
  • Strong working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and current design codes, especially the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry practices, standards, and legislation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree or Professional Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) or Engineering (PE) license is preferred.
  • Experience with technical advancements in the industry.
