About the position

The Lead Engineer is responsible for the development, expansion, planning, design, maintenance, and operation of protection and control systems essential for the safe and reliable operation of the transmission and distribution system. This role involves coordinating system evaluations, supervising engineering staff, and contributing to the organization's Life Cycle Plan. The position requires a blend of technical expertise and leadership to ensure compliance with engineering standards and to support operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, coaches, and develops engineers; approves time and conducts performance reviews.
  • Assigns, prioritizes, and directs work performed by Engineers and/or Designers.
  • Responsible for the scope and cost development, justification, and approval of the Life Cycle Plan activities over a multi-year horizon and for ongoing projects.
  • Review and evaluate proposed changes to existing electric facilities to ensure compatibility with established protection system standards.
  • Create new Protection and Control system designs in accordance with Eversource Standards as required.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of design and specification for additions, modifications, and replacements to the transmission and distribution systems.
  • Oversee or provide guidance in the development, calculation, and documentation of settings and logic for protective relays and related equipment.
  • Review and evaluate results of coordination studies using fault simulation software.
  • Analyze protection system operations during disturbances to support event analysis.
  • Ensure adherence to company and compliance engineering standards and safety codes.
  • Collaborate with other Engineers to ensure consistency and teamwork.
  • Provide technical support and direction to operating areas during normal and emergency situations.
  • Accountable for root-cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Interface with Planning, Operations, and Field personnel to support system maintenance.
  • Evaluate and select technology and equipment for the system.
  • Develop standards and procedures for design, operation, and maintenance.
  • Manage work activities independently without frequent guidance.
  • Assume the role of Manager as required.
  • Support storm and emergency restoration assignments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology; advanced degree in Power System Engineering preferred.
  • Eight years of experience in technical, operational, or engineering aspects; supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of standard office computer software (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience performing overcurrent and distance coordination studies with ASPEN One-liner modeling software or equivalent.
  • Experience performing post-event analysis using relay and digital fault recorder event records.
  • Experience with the design and installation of protection and control schemes utilizing IEC61850 protocol.
  • Familiarity with SCADA, RTUs, HMIs, telecommunication, relay, substation, protection, control systems, transmission, distribution, and power line carrier logic.
