About the position

The Relay Subject Matter Expert (SME) at Duke Energy provides critical technical support and guidance for protective relay schemes and associated equipment used in Transmission, Generation, and Distribution systems. This role is essential for ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical systems, offering second and third-level support to field crews and engineers, and involves both office and field work.

Responsibilities

  • Provides evaluation and interpretation of equipment test results and trending.
  • Recommends proactive maintenance tasks to Equipment Engineering for P&C equipment to mitigate recurring problems.
  • Provides field support for troubleshooting, adjustment, repair, and replacement of protective relay schemes and other ancillary components.
  • Assists Region Engineer with outage analysis, documentation, and follow-up.
  • Provides forensic analysis on failed parts and equipment.
  • Performs substation, mobile, and equipment condition assessments.
  • Evaluates the performance and reliability of P&C assets and identifies/mitigates system or equipment issues that may impact system reliability.
  • Establishes working relationships with industry organizations and other utility counterparts.
  • Supports thorough investigation of PRC004 protection system mis-operations and spearheads necessary corrective actions.
  • Provides C&M with ArcFlash calculations when requested.
  • Assists in evaluating out of-tolerance relays.
  • Evaluates equipment being removed from service for future disposition.
  • Supports as needed for emergent/emergency projects for failed equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program and/or PE Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) required.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • 8 plus years related work experience.
