About the position

As a Lead Engineer at Northwestern Mutual, you will play a pivotal role in driving future technologies while advancing current systems. This position involves providing thought leadership, mentoring less experienced engineers, and developing system architectures that meet both current and future business needs. You will be responsible for creating cohesive plans that align with organizational goals and deadlines, ensuring solutions are robust, scalable, and maintainable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide thought leadership and influence peers in and outside of the department.
  • Architect solutions considering availability, security, compliance, privacy, and legal requirements.
  • Introduce industry concepts and technologies to solve important problems.
  • Integrate the work of multiple teams into a cohesive plan that aligns with goals and deadlines.
  • Create solutions that are successful across performance, scalability, robustness, and maintainability.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced engineers, assigning stretch assignments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent training and experience.
  • 6-8 years of professional IT experience.
  • 6-8 years experience with at least one OS/hosting platform.
  • 6-8 years experience in performance tuning of application stacks, OSs, DBs, etc.
  • 3 years experience with Cloud-based PaaS and SaaS platforms and integration points to On-Prem infrastructure.
  • 6-8 years experience with virtualization and containerization.
  • 6-8 years experience with monitoring and performance management of systems.
  • 6-8 years experience with scripting development, networking, and Identity Platform and tools.
  • 6-8 years experience with basic network troubleshooting concepts.
  • 6-8 years experience with modern development and scripting languages.
  • Experience with CICD concepts and tools, branching strategies, and delivering infrastructure as a product.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills within area of expertise and adjacent domains.
  • Solid understanding of traditional or cloud computing technologies including Networking, Compute, Storage, Development, Data, Operations, or Security.
  • Experience creating, delivering, and supporting highly available architectures.
  • Experience with multiple delivery methodologies such as Agile and Waterfall.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Jamf, Azure, Intune, Active Directory, Group Policy, Print Services, VMware, Horizon, Software Distribution, SCCM.
  • Experience with MAC, Windows, Mobile.
