About the position

The Lead Engineering Technician will provide technical guidance and oversight in the Engineering and Planning Department at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. This role involves managing non-nuclear ship systems, ensuring timely completion of projects, and mentoring staff. The technician will coordinate ship systems readiness to support production scheduling and key events, while also serving as a subject matter expert in various engineering disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical guidance in support of shipyard waterfront availabilities for non-nuclear ship systems.
• Review, progress, and assure timely completion of non-nuclear interface work.
• Coordinate and oversee the continuous overview of ship's systems readiness.
• Lead, coach, mentor, and develop staff, including onboarding new employees.
• Identify, distribute, and balance workload and tasks among employees.
• Serve as a subject matter expert and mentor to lower-level engineers and production workforce.

Requirements

• Must be a US Citizen.
• Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.
• Experience managing and coordinating complex maintenance, repair, and construction of naval vessels.
• Knowledge of engineering principles applied to US Naval Ships maintenance and repair.
• Experience with SUBSAFE/Reentry Controls and CVN Propulsion Machinery components.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers.
• Familiarity with technical characteristics and operations of naval vessels.
