About the position

The Field Service Engineer - Automation plays a crucial role in ensuring the successful installation, service, and commissioning of GE automation systems, particularly in marine environments. Under general guidance and minimal supervision, this position involves a wide range of engineering tasks that are essential for maintaining the technical integrity of the systems. The engineer will be responsible for troubleshooting issues during scheduled port visits or at sea, diagnosing problems, and implementing corrective actions to ensure customer satisfaction. This role requires the development of various documentation, including commissioning and maintenance procedures, as well as daily logs to track progress and issues encountered during service operations. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Field Service Engineer will also take on project management duties, acting as a technical leader to resolve customer issues effectively. This includes developing presentations and providing training to customers, ensuring they are well-informed about the systems and services provided. The engineer will coordinate with various teams, including customer service, parts, and product engineering, to identify additional opportunities for service and upgrades that can enhance customer productivity. This collaborative approach is vital for maintaining strong customer relationships and ensuring the successful execution of modernization projects. The position requires a commitment to safety, as the engineer will perform work on-board vessels, adhering to GE and customer safety guidelines. The role may involve extended hours or overtime during peak periods and emergency situations, as well as significant travel, both domestically and internationally, to customer sites for extended periods. This dynamic and challenging position offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment while contributing to the success of GE's automation systems in the marine industry.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide range of engineering tasks to ensure the technical integrity and proper installation and commissioning of GE automation systems at site locations during ship construction.
  • Conduct troubleshooting activities at site locations during scheduled Port visits or at sea to diagnose problems, determine appropriate resolution, and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop requisite documentation to execute work, including commissioning procedures, maintenance procedures, and daily logs.
  • Execute on-site project management and technical leader duties to resolve customer issues and provide customer satisfaction.
  • Develop presentations and provide training and instruction to customers.
  • Coordinate additional opportunities to serve the customer with the customer service team, parts, other FSE's, repair services, sales, and product engineering teams.
  • Advise the customer of recommended upgrades, parts, and service opportunities to improve customer productivity and sell GE parts and services.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities for the customer and plan for inspections.
  • Provide support to engineering teams working on customer modernization projects.
  • Support the bidding process for customer modernization projects.
  • Provide on-call support in response to customer calls for service.
  • Complete timely service reports and other administrative requirements.
  • Perform work on-board vessels within GE/Customer safety guidelines either in shipyards or offshore.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited college or university, or an Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of 2 additional years of related industry experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of field service and/or commissioning experience in a field service/commissioning environment with automation systems in a marine environment.
  • US Citizen with the ability to achieve security clearance for Department of Defense projects.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 85% of the time on short notice.
  • Must be physically fit to be able to board vessels offshore.
  • Must be able to pass a HUET and offshore survival course which includes activities in a swimming pool.
