About the position

The Lead Grounds Maintenance Worker at Woodland Community College is responsible for overseeing and performing gardening and grounds maintenance work to enhance the campus's aesthetic appeal. This full-time position involves training and directing grounds maintenance staff, ensuring the upkeep of the grounds, and managing various maintenance tasks under the supervision of the Grounds and Maintenance Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Perform gardening and grounds maintenance work in the beautification of campus grounds.
  • Maintain and repair water distribution systems, mainlines, control valves, irrigation, and related wiring systems.
  • Prepare soil; apply pest and weed control and fertilizing chemicals; plant trees, grass, and shrubs; mow grass; prune trees and shrubs.
  • Operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment and tools including lawn mowers, edgers, weeders, sweepers, rototillers, tractors, skip loaders, and backhoes.
  • Maintain equipment as necessary; sharpen reels; replace bearings and seals; grind bed knives.
  • Train, assign, and provide work direction to assigned grounds maintenance workers; receive work orders, prioritize and assign work; inspect work in progress and upon completion for compliance to work orders and safety.
  • Sweep sidewalks; rake leaves and lawns; collect paper and trash and perform general grounds cleaning.
  • Participate in the design, planning, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation and drainage systems, including special athletic grounds facilities.
  • Remove fallen trees, stumps, weeds, undergrowth, and debris.
  • Load and unload trucks with equipment, plants, and materials; clean and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Move, install, and paint concrete parking bumpers and parking lot and roadway signs.
  • Renovate and maintain athletic fields; core, drag, grade, and overseed fields; install irrigation systems.
  • Assist in the planning, installation, and repair of concrete walks, patios, and mowing strips.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school.
  • Two years of increasingly responsible grounds maintenance experience including the operation of various landscape construction equipment.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Valid Qualified Applicator's license.
