About the position

As a Hardware Engineer in Research and Development at SEL, you will play a crucial role in the design and testing of devices that are embedded in the power grid and critical infrastructure. These devices are essential for preventing blackouts, controlling processes, and ensuring reliable communication of critical information. Your work will contribute to making outages safer and shorter in duration, monitoring infrastructure to prevent outages, and recording critical data to inform decisions. You will be involved in adding cybersecurity, automation, and communication features to our products, which are built with the highest-quality components in SEL facilities by dedicated SEL employees. In this position, you will analyze, design, and develop conventional analog and digital circuits. You will conduct moderate to complex design reviews to demonstrate the robustness of products and circuits. Your responsibilities will include developing hardware specifications and preparing system-level specifications. You will also write and analyze test plans, execute tests, and evaluate test results for use at peer design reviews and in project notebooks. Maintaining accurate project documentation, including data sheets, instruction manuals, and design and test documentation, will be a key part of your role. Additionally, you will manage and/or lead hardware projects of moderate complexity and coordinate engineering activities with purchasing and manufacturing teams. This position is located in Pullman, WA, where SEL's corporate office is situated in Eastern Washington. Responsibilities

  • Analyze, design, and develop conventional analog and digital circuits.
  • Conduct moderate to complex design reviews to demonstrate product and circuit robustness.
  • Develop hardware specifications and prepare system level specifications.
  • Write and analyze test plans, execute tests, and evaluate test results for peer design reviews and project notebooks.
  • Prepare and maintain product documentation, including data sheets, instruction manuals, project notebooks, design and test documentation.
  • Provide and maintain accurate project plans.
  • Manage and/or lead hardware projects of moderate complexity.
  • Coordinate engineering activities with purchasing and manufacturing.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Typically 6+ years of combined experience in at least 2 of the following areas: Analog and/or mixed signal circuit design, power supply design, design for EMC, product lifecycle support.
  • Strong knowledge of project management processes and procedures.
  • Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills.
  • Strong ability to mentor less experienced team members.
