About the position

The Lead Health Technician (Ophthalmology) at the Department of Veterans Affairs plays a crucial role in supporting ophthalmologists in various clinical settings. This position involves performing complex diagnostic procedures, assisting in surgical procedures, and providing education to patients and medical trainees. The Lead Technician also oversees the workflow within the ophthalmology clinic, ensuring efficient patient care and staff coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Assist ophthalmologists in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and follow-up care.
  • Perform complex diagnostic procedures and assist in clinic-based surgical procedures.
  • Educate patients and their legal representatives about procedures and care.
  • Train and supervise eye care staff, students, and trainees.
  • Monitor workflow and make work assignments to ensure efficient patient care.
  • Independently troubleshoot clinic problems and complex instruments.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient medical records according to policy.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and volunteers in a courteous manner.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • One year of experience in a healthcare field such as nursing, medical assisting, or health technician.
  • Two years of education above high school with at least six semester hours in a healthcare-related field or an associate's degree in a healthcare-related discipline.
  • Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) with the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a supervisory role within a healthcare setting.
  • Familiarity with ophthalmic medical assisting procedures and protocols.
