About the position

Sushi-San is seeking a Lead Host to join our dynamic team in River North, known for its exceptional Japanese cuisine and vibrant atmosphere. As a Lead Host, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that our guests receive a warm welcome and exceptional service from the moment they arrive. This position involves training and developing host employees, maintaining training manuals, and upholding our high standards of guest service. You will be responsible for greeting and seating guests, managing reservations, and maintaining accurate guest counts and wait times. Your role will also include assisting with coat check duties and ensuring that the overall guest experience exceeds expectations. In this fast-paced environment, you will interact with guests and staff, providing guidance and support to host employees in a fair and dignified manner. You will need to multitask effectively under pressure while maintaining a calm demeanor. The Lead Host will also be responsible for processing new-hire paperwork, conducting training sessions, and observing service standards to communicate feedback to management. This position requires a commitment to excellence and a passion for providing outstanding service in a collaborative team setting. The ideal candidate will be available to work a variety of hours, including weekends, and will be able to safely and effectively move furniture and equipment as needed. You will need to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to perform job requirements and follow directions. This role requires physical stamina, as you will be standing and walking for extended periods, and may involve lifting and moving items up to 50 pounds. Responsibilities

  • Interact with, direct, train and develop host employees in a fair and dignified manner.
  • Warmly greet and seat guests in the restaurant.
  • Answer telephones, and take orders, messages and reservations.
  • Assist with processing hosts' new-hire paperwork.
  • Schedule, conduct and/or oversee all aspects of new-hire and ongoing host training.
  • Review and maintain host manuals and training materials.
  • Observe host employees' service standards and communicate observations to Management, Partners and Trainers.
  • Assist in developing and implementing necessary plans of action.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating restaurant's zoning procedures.
  • Use proper phone and voicemail etiquette and guidelines.
  • Assist with clearing, cleaning and resetting tables and maintaining restrooms.
  • Sell and accurately account for gift cards.
  • Understand and respond knowledgeably to questions about the restaurant and menu.
  • Follow all steps of service.
  • Understand and follow the food allergy procedure and special orders/restrictions.
  • Comply with all safety and sanitation guidelines and procedures.

Requirements

  • Ability to effectively communicate in order to perform and follow job requirements in written and spoken direction.
  • Multitask calmly and effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to stand and walk for an entire shift and move safely through all areas of the restaurant, which may include stairs, uneven or slick surfaces.
  • Ability to safely and effectively move chairs, tables, highchairs and booster seats.
  • Proficiency in the use and operation of all necessary tools and equipment, including the reservation, telephone, paging and voicemail systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a fast-paced restaurant environment.
  • Previous training or supervisory experience in hospitality.
