About the position

The Lead Medical Records Technician is responsible for maintaining both electronic and paper medical records, ensuring their accuracy and completeness regarding patient conditions, treatments, and health outcomes. This role involves overseeing workflows, mentoring team members, and ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulations while providing excellent customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Oversees workflows and ensures departmental efficiency and compliance with policies and regulations.
• Provides guidance and leadership to the medical records team, developing and updating policies, procedures, and training programs.
• Assists patients and external customers with phone correspondence and maintains accurate patient care records.
• Reviews medical records for deficiencies and resolves discrepancies through analysis and collaboration with other departments.
• Accurately scans and indexes documents to patient charts and maintains the master patient index within the organization's system.
• Interacts with Patient Access, Patient Financial Services, and physician office staff to verify information.
• Processes requests for patient health information, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and confidentiality protocols.
• Participates in quality assurance initiatives and audits records for compliance.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Associates degree in a related field preferred.
• 3+ years of experience in a healthcare environment preferred.
• AHIMA certification preferred.
• RHIT or RHIA credentials or actively pursuing certification may substitute for some years of experience.
• Experience in an office setting is preferred.
