About the position

The Lead Medical Technologist at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration is responsible for facilitating team processes and ensuring that laboratory operations are coordinated with management. This role requires advanced knowledge of medical technology and involves overseeing daily work activities, maintaining laboratory instrumentation, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The Lead Medical Technologist acts as a liaison between departments and is responsible for training and mentoring staff in laboratory practices.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates team or unit processes by collaborating with team members to coordinate tasks and goals.
  • Oversees all aspects of laboratory operations in their area of specialty, including record maintenance and compliance.
  • Acts as a liaison to other departments for laboratory specialty matters.
  • Prepares reports and maintains administrative records related to laboratory operations.
  • Coordinates training in laboratory methods and techniques for staff.
  • Performs moderate and complex testing methods in assigned laboratory areas.
  • Maintains and calibrates laboratory instrumentation to ensure correct performance.
  • Troubleshoots instrumentation and equipment problems during shifts to ensure uninterrupted testing.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory agency rules and regulations such as CAP, TJC, AABB, and OSHA.
  • Coordinates quality control activities and proficiency programs for the laboratory specialty.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or related science.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) from recognized certification bodies.
  • One year of creditable experience equivalent to the full performance level (GS-9) in a clinical laboratory setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Current working knowledge of clinical laboratory processes and concepts.
  • Blood Bank experience is required.
  • Hospital or reference laboratory experience is recommended.
