About the position

The Lead Medical Technologist at the VA Illiana Healthcare System is responsible for overseeing laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and providing expert consultation on complex testing procedures. This role involves collaboration with a team to coordinate tasks and achieve departmental goals, as well as training staff and maintaining quality control in the laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates team processes to ensure coordination with management on tasks and goals.
  • Provides authoritative advice on complex and emerging tests such as molecular/DNA testing and genetic testing.
  • Conducts studies to recommend changes for improving laboratory operations.
  • Designs workflows to meet objectives in the clinical specialty area.
  • Advises on the appropriateness of specific tests and alternative testing methods.
  • Identifies training needs for laboratory personnel and resolves complex issues related to testing.
  • Conducts ongoing reviews of laboratory work and equipment maintenance.
  • Plans and coordinates quality control and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Analyzes trends and technology to adopt appropriate testing methods.
  • Maintains compliance with federal regulations and accreditation requirements.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Certification as a medical technologist (MT) or medical laboratory scientist (MLS) by ASCP or AMT is required.
  • At least 1 year of experience equivalent to GS-9 level in laboratory operations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in molecular/DNA testing and flow cytometry.
  • Knowledge of regulatory, licensing, and accrediting agency requirements.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate daily work activities in a laboratory setting.
