About the position

The Lead Monitor Room Officer at the Walters Art Museum is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for visitors, staff, and the art collection. This role involves monitoring activities within the museum, reporting hazards, maintaining order, and enforcing museum policies. The Lead Officer will also provide leadership to other Monitor Room Officers and assist in administrative duties, ensuring the museum's safety protocols are upheld at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of the art collection, building structure, and museum policies.
  • Conduct rounds throughout the museum to monitor visitor and staff activity for compliance with policies.
  • Check for fire and safety hazards, vandalism, suspicious activity, and improper behavior.
  • Report all incidents to the security supervisor and respond to safety and security threats as directed.
  • Ensure the safety of the museum when closed to the public by conducting regular rounds and securing all areas.
  • Monitor alarms and CCTV systems, maintaining a strong working knowledge of all systems.
  • Inspect the art at various times during the shift and report any unusual circumstances.
  • Prepare accurate and timely daily logs of all actions during the shift, including reports of damage and unsafe conditions.
  • Conduct regular inspections of all security equipment and ensure the museum is free from hazardous situations.
  • Serve as the communications hub for the museum, answering calls and monitoring activity around the museum.
  • Assist the Monitor Room Supervisor with writing schedules and reviewing leave requests.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to Monitor Room Officers and assist with resolving personnel issues.
  • Train and onboard new Monitor Room Officers and re-train current officers.

Requirements

  • Valid State of Maryland Security Guard Certification.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of three years of previous experience in the security field, preferably in a museum setting.
  • Strong leadership skills and knowledge of security principles and practices.
  • First Aid/AED/CPR certifications.
  • Proficiency with monitoring and controlling alarm systems, CCTV, and communication systems.
  • Experience in preparing incident reports and using standard office software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a museum setting preferred.
  • Ability to multitask and respond to emergencies under pressure.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
