About the position

The Lead Network Engineer at Emory University is a pivotal role within the Office of Information Technology (OIT), responsible for the senior-level management and maintenance of the university's LAN/WAN environment and computer systems. This position entails overseeing the daily upkeep and administration of the network infrastructure, ensuring that all systems operate efficiently and effectively. The Lead Network Engineer will be involved in the design, planning, implementation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the university's network architecture, which includes voice, data, and transport systems. In this role, the engineer will apply advanced troubleshooting techniques to resolve complex network issues and collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure active maintenance and future growth of the network. The Lead Network Engineer will also be responsible for setting policies, guidelines, and best practices that govern the maintenance and expansion of the network infrastructure. This position requires a strong aptitude for troubleshooting, testing, scripting, and coding, as well as the ability to mentor and lead less-experienced engineers. The engineer will report directly to the NOC Manager, Run or Build Manager of Network Services, or the Network Services Director, and will perform other duties as required to support the department's objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain the university's LAN/WAN environment and computer systems.
  • Oversee daily upkeep and administration of the network infrastructure.
  • Design, plan, implement, troubleshoot, and maintain the network architecture.
  • Design and implement voice, data, and transport systems.
  • Apply advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving techniques to complex network issues.
  • Collaborate with others for active maintenance and future growth of the network.
  • Set policies, guidelines, and establish best practices for network maintenance and growth.
  • Mentor and lead less-experienced engineers in troubleshooting and coding tasks.
  • Report to the NOC Manager, Run or Build Manager of Network Services, or the Network Services Director.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related field.
  • Ten years of related IT experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and problem-solving abilities in complex network environments.
  • Experience in designing and implementing network infrastructure and architecture.
  • Ability to mentor and lead less-experienced engineers.
