About the position

As a Lead Network Engineer at Lumen Technologies, you will play a pivotal role in the evolution of the worldwide Internet backbone. This position requires you to interact with various teams including Architecture (IP and Security), Planning, Operations, Lab, and Systems (NSD, alarming) to implement the necessary equipment and designs. Your responsibilities will include researching, writing, and testing requirements for hardware and software to ensure interoperability and validation of features, functions, and behavior. You will apply advanced engineering and network principles, theories, concepts, and technologies to solve unusually complex problems and issues that arise in the network infrastructure. In this role, you will also be responsible for driving vendor requirements, resolving bug fixes, and managing code upgrades and vendor development as necessary. As a subject matter expert, you may act as a technical project lead or provide leadership for lower-level employees. Your self-motivation, problem-solving capabilities, sense of urgency, and accountability will be crucial in ensuring the success of the projects you undertake. This hybrid position requires you to be onsite at the customer location once a week, allowing for a blend of remote and in-person collaboration. The Lead Network Engineer will be expected to have a deep understanding of Internet (IP) Engineering, including expertise in protocols such as BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, BFD, and LLDP. You will need to demonstrate detailed experience in BGP route policy and the redistribution of routes between protocols, as well as expert-level troubleshooting knowledge with multiple vendor routing and forwarding architectures. Your role will also involve designing and configuring servers on BOBJ, applying advanced engineering principles to resolve complex interoperability problems, and ensuring the network's security and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with Architecture (IP and Security), Planning, Operations, Lab, Systems (NSD, alarming) to implement equipment and designs necessary to evolve the worldwide Internet backbone.
  • Research, write requirements to test hardware and software to ensure interoperability and validation of features, functions, and behavior.
  • Expertise in the certification of equipment, MOPs/network configurations.
  • Knowledge of ethernet switching equipment and switching architectures used on Lumen's Internet networks.
  • Expert level experience with protocols used on Lumen's Internet networks- BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, BFD and LLDP, and their use.
  • Detailed experience in BGP route policy and the redistribution of routes between protocols.
  • Expert level knowledge and experience with BGP route reflector architecture and configurations across multiple address families.
  • Expert level troubleshooting knowledge with multiple vendor routing and forwarding architectures to resolve possible production issues or design behavior issues.
  • Strong knowledge of UDP and TCP protocols to help design secure and efficient Internet Networks.
  • Expert level experience with creating Layer 3/Layer 4 filters and ACLs and creating configurations to meet requirements.
  • Solid experience with QoS traffic classification, remarking and per class queuing. Create QoS configurations to meet Product specifications and to resolve production issues.
  • Strong knowledge of distributed denial of service equipment and protocols.
  • Design and configure servers on BOBJ including Dashboard Design, Explorer, Mobile integration of BOBJ, Universe Configuration.
  • Apply advanced engineering and network principles, theories, concepts and technologies to solve unusually complex problems and issues.
  • Interact and drive vendor requirements, resolution of bug fixes, code upgrades, and vendor development as necessary.
  • Resolve difficult production/interoperability problems by working with cross functional teams and applying advanced engineering and network principles, theories and concepts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent experience/education.
  • Typically 10+ years related experience or 8+ years related experience with a Master's degree.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect or similar AWS certifications.
  • Some level of system administration experience with focus on scripting and tools such as Ansible/Puppet/Chef, Python, PowerShell etc.
  • Excellent documentation/technical writing skills required.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Financial trading experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS / M Tech / BS / B Tech degree in Computer Science, related technical field preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • Knowledge of telecommunications, specifically with VoIP protocols such as SIP.
  • Experience in large scale data mining and big data solution implementation.
  • Deployment experience- Visual intelligence and predictive.
  • Universe Design - single and multi-source is required.
  • Universe Relational, OLAP, and BICS real Time Universe experience.
  • Universe alias, loop, and security experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new technologies and learn quickly.
  • Industry experience with DevOps.
  • ITIL certifications.
