About the position

The Lead Offer-in-Compromise Examiner position at the Department of the Treasury involves overseeing the Offer in Compromise program within the Small Business Self-Employed Division. The role requires maintaining administrative materials, preparing reports, and ensuring team members are informed about policies and procedures. The examiner will represent the team in meetings, report on progress, and assist in achieving team goals while ensuring compliance with IRS standards.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain program and administrative reference materials, project files, and relevant background documents.
  • Prepare reports and maintain records of work accomplishments and personal administrative information.
  • Coordinate the preparation, presentation, and communication of work-related information to the supervisor.
  • Estimate and report on progress in meeting established milestones and deadlines for assignments, projects, and tasks.
  • Ensure all team members are aware of and participate in planning for team goals and objectives.
  • Represent the team in meetings and convey findings and recommendations to other team leaders and program officials.
  • Report periodically to the supervisor on team and individual work accomplishments and training needs.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, including experience with the Internal Revenue Code and tax rulings.
  • Experience using standard accounting and financial analysis techniques to examine financial information.
  • Familiarity with collection techniques and investigative methods.
  • Experience in interest-based negotiation techniques to secure information and reach acceptable terms.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to discuss investigative outcomes with taxpayers and management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field such as business administration, law, or economics.
  • Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. in a related field.
