About the position

PICO California is a multi-racial, multi-faith state network comprising ten local affiliates who organize across 18 counties and represent 500 congregations and nearly 650,000 Californians. Our mission is to catalyze faith-based and spiritually centered people power in California to create systemic change for the most vulnerable so that all Californians thrive. Since 1994, PICO California has been at the forefront of organizing working families to reform our immigration system, improve schools, increase access to healthcare, end mass incarceration, and improve the quality of life for our families and our communities. We are seeking a Lead Community Organizer who will develop and implement community organizing strategies that meet the project objectives. This will be done by working with the leadership at PICO California and Inclusive Action for the City. The project-based partnership between Inclusive Action for the City and PICO California seeks to improve working conditions for recyclers in Los Angeles County through community organization, policy advocacy, and partnership building across various stakeholders and community-based organizations. In this role, you will conduct outreach to recyclers to understand their needs, challenges, and aspirations. You will build organizing teams composed of recyclers that will lead the project's advocacy efforts. Additionally, you will create partnerships with community-based organizations and potential advocacy partners, collaborate with Inclusive Action for the City to conduct policy research and power analysis, and organize convenings related to the project.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting outreach to recyclers to understand their needs, challenges, and aspirations.
  • Building organizing teams composed of recyclers that will lead the project's advocacy efforts.
  • Creating partnerships with community-based organizations and potential advocacy partners.
  • Collaborating with Inclusive Action for the City to conduct policy research and power analysis to help determine policy campaigns to improve recyclers' working and economic conditions.
  • Organizing and preparing convenings related to the project in conjunction with Inclusive Action for the City.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant work experience in community organizing, advocacy, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in community organizing and advocacy.
  • Ability to engage with diverse communities and foster relationships.
  • Experience in developing and implementing strategies to meet project objectives.
  • Ability to identify and assess potential project areas and communities for engagement.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining partnerships with local organizations.
  • Ability to identify and collaborate with potential policy advocacy partners.
  • Experience conducting policy research and power analysis.
