About the position

The Lead Pharmacy Technician at Shasta Regional Medical Center plays a crucial role in supporting the pharmacy department under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This position is essential for ensuring the smooth operation of pharmacy activities that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. The Lead Pharmacy Technician is responsible for a variety of technical duties, including maintaining patient records, setting up, packaging, and labeling medication doses, and filling and dispensing routine orders for stock supplies in patient care areas. Additionally, the technician will maintain inventories of drug supplies and mix drugs with parenteral fluids as needed. In this role, the Lead Pharmacy Technician will also be involved in physician order entry, scheduling and supervising pharmacy technicians, and overseeing the use of automated drug delivery equipment such as Pyxis. The position requires maintaining quality assurance programs and generally overseeing the performance of pharmacy technicians. The scope of care provided by the pharmacy department includes a wide range of services such as General Medicine/Surgical, Intensive Care Services, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Emergency Care, Transitional Care, Geriatrics, and Outpatient Services. This position is vital for delivering patient-centered healthcare with compassion, dignity, and respect for every patient and their family.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in various activities of the pharmacy department under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Maintain patient records and ensure accuracy in medication dispensing.
  • Set up, package, and label medication doses for patients.
  • Fill and dispense routine orders for stock supplies in patient care areas.
  • Maintain inventories of drug supplies and mix drugs with parenteral fluids as required.
  • Perform physician order entry and manage scheduling of pharmacy technicians.
  • Supervise the use of automated drug delivery equipment (Pyxis).
  • Maintain quality assurance programs within the pharmacy department.
  • Oversee the performance of pharmacy technicians and ensure compliance with regulations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years current hospital pharmacy technician experience required.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.
  • State Pharmacy Technician License/Registration required (if mandated by state regulations).
  • Proficiency with various computer systems, EHR, ADS, and drug preparation or delivery systems.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduate of ASHP-accredited or equivalent pharmacy technician training program preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Pyxis and Meditech systems.
  • Knowledge of drug ordering processes and inventory management.
