About the position

The Lead Police Officer position at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for law enforcement duties aimed at preserving peace and preventing, detecting, and investigating crimes on VA-controlled property. This role involves leading a team, ensuring compliance with laws, and providing a safe environment for all individuals on the premises.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a unit or team of employees and distribute/balance workload according to established workflow or job specialization.
  • Engage and communicate with individuals to ensure a positive and safe environment.
  • Instruct and train employees in specific tasks and job techniques.
  • Resolve simple complaints of employees and refer others to supervisors.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, county, and municipal laws as they pertain to VA property.
  • Write uniform offense reports covering incidents with factual information and submit reports timely.
  • Question victims and witnesses at the scene of incidents.
  • Issue citations for observed violations of the law, rules, or regulations.
  • Assist victims of accidents or assaults by providing first aid.
  • Obtain statements from persons involved in or who have witnessed an accident.
  • Pursue and apprehend individuals fleeing a crime scene or resisting arrest on VA property.
  • Identify and react to life-threatening situations such as natural or manmade disasters, hostage situations, or felony assaults.
  • Conduct long and short-term investigations.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • Must pass a urinalysis drug test prior to appointment.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be willing to serve a probationary period.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Must complete an online onboarding process.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all VA Health Care Personnel.
  • Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is required for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior Law Enforcement Supervisory Experience.
  • Knowledge of basic Federal laws and regulations and VA law enforcement operations.
