About the position

The Bilingual Lead Preschool Teacher at People Serving People, Inc. is responsible for running the preschool classroom with a focus on trauma-informed principles and goals. This role involves collaborating closely with the Preschool Teacher, interns, and volunteers to create a nurturing and supportive environment for children aged 3 to 5 years, as well as their parents. The ideal candidate will demonstrate patience, enthusiasm, and respect for both children and their families, fostering a warm atmosphere conducive to development. Spanish fluency is preferred to effectively communicate with the families served by the organization. In this position, the teacher will understand the impact of stress and trauma on children living in a shelter setting and will implement a trauma-informed framework within the classroom. Responsibilities include planning and facilitating a developmentally appropriate curriculum that emphasizes social-emotional development, creating communications for parents, and performing administrative duties related to student records and paperwork. The teacher will also encourage pre-literacy and social skills, work with Minneapolis Public Schools to refer children with special needs, and maintain a clean and organized classroom environment. The Bilingual Lead Preschool Teacher will also administer basic first aid, care for sick children, and assist in other Early Childhood Development Program classrooms as needed. This role is essential in ensuring that the preschool program meets the developmental needs of children while supporting their families in a holistic manner.

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the Preschool Teacher to meet the children's needs.
  • Understands the impact of stress and trauma on children in a shelter setting.
  • Implements and builds on the trauma-informed framework of the classrooms.
  • Plans and facilitates curriculum for young children in a developmentally appropriate setting focused on social-emotional development.
  • Creates monthly and daily communications for parents, including daily reports and newsletters.
  • Performs administrative duties such as handling required paperwork and maintaining student files.
  • Encourages and teaches pre-literacy skills, social skills, and developmental skills.
  • Collaborates with Minneapolis Public Schools to refer children with special needs.
  • Updates curriculum continually to meet the needs of students.
  • Maintains appropriate program records.
  • Welcomes and communicates with parents.
  • Maintains a clean classroom appearance by organizing, cleaning, and sanitizing daily.
  • Administers basic first aid and cares for sick children.
  • Assists in other Early Childhood Development Program classrooms as necessary for ratio.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Educational Services Assistant Manager or Educational Services Manager.

Requirements

  • CDA, Associates in Child Development or Early Childhood Education, or Bachelor's Degree in any field.
  • Preferred: BA or BS in Early Childhood, Elementary Education, Child Development or related field.
  • Fluent in Spanish both written and verbal.
  • Completes first aid and Red Cross certified CPR training every 2 years.
  • Completes 24 hours of in-service training per year.
  • Completes required trainings and documentation for Parent Aware rating.
  • Skill in working with children, their families, and the public.
  • Skill in evaluating situations and determining the needs of children.
  • Ability to articulate program goals and philosophy and apply it in the Early Childhood Development Program.
  • Ability to teach developmental, social, and emotional skills.
  • Ability to establish a warm and supportive relationship with children and their parents or guardians.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed Care principles and models.
  • Knowledge of the developmental and emotional needs of young children.
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures used in a child development center.
  • Knowledge of basic health and first aid techniques.
