About the position

The Production Lead at Southwire Company, LLC plays a crucial role in the manufacturing process, acting as the primary interface between the operators on the production floor and management. This position is responsible for providing real-time direction to the hourly workforce, ensuring that production activities align with scheduled plans. The Production Lead is tasked with supporting the site and corporate quality goals, focusing on scrap reduction and product quality verification. This includes performing and documenting required quality checks, communicating scrap reduction techniques, and assisting direct reports with quality checks and sample testing. In addition to quality management, the Production Lead drives overall performance in the manufacturing area, ensuring that production activities occur as scheduled and that the volumes produced meet the outlined plans. This role involves promoting processes and standards, ensuring raw materials are available and meet quality specifications, and maintaining equipment in a safe and hygienic condition. The Production Lead also plays a key role in continuous improvement initiatives, working closely with other lead operators and management to minimize downtime and waste while effectively utilizing staff. Labor management is another critical aspect of this role, as the Production Lead oversees the day-to-day management of employees, ensuring they are adequately trained and flexible to maintain production continuity. This includes monitoring attendance, addressing behavioral standards, and providing coaching and support to team members. The Production Lead serves as a point of contact for employees, particularly those in training or new to their tasks, and assists with evaluations to ensure clear feedback and goal setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide minute-by-minute and hour-by-hour direction to the hourly workforce on the production floor.
  • Support site and corporate quality and scrap reduction goals and objectives.
  • Verify product and/or raw materials for assigned equipment/area.
  • Perform, review, and document required quality checks as outlined by process documents.
  • Communicate and educate direct reports on product specifications and benchmarks.
  • Drive overall performance to ensure production activities occur as scheduled.
  • Ensure raw materials are available and meet quality standards.
  • Maintain equipment in a safe and hygienic condition and rectify issues in a timely manner.
  • Drive continuous improvement methodology within the area to improve operational performance.
  • Monitor attendance and refer unsatisfactory attendance to the Direct Supervisor or Manager.
  • Motivate, develop, and encourage team members to maximize productive work.

Requirements

  • Understanding of fundamental manufacturing processes, preferably in a wire and cable operation.
  • No final documented discipline on record.
  • Knowledge of OPS, basic quality requirements, and safety at a VPP level.
  • Good people skills and the patience to develop future production leaders.
