About the position

The Research Engineer - SOFC/SOEC Mechanical Engineering position at GE Vernova Research focuses on the development and optimization of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC). This role involves leading projects that contribute to sustainable energy solutions, addressing challenges in energy conversion and storage, and collaborating with various stakeholders to drive innovation in the energy sector.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and lead projects in energy conversion and storage, specifically focusing on solid oxide fuel cells and electrolysis cells.
  • Conduct and lead basic and applied research including mechanical and system design, SOFC and SOEC development and optimization, and performance testing.
  • Work independently and guide the development of new technologies and capabilities for solid oxide cells.
  • Design and execute experiments, leading tasks to benefit GE Vernova businesses and customers.
  • Shape proposals with GE Vernova businesses, government agencies, universities, and national laboratories.
  • Contribute and lead proposal teams as Principal Investigator or team member.
  • Formulate system requirements for energy conversion projects.
  • Prepare written reports and presentations for stakeholders detailing the value, strategy, approach, and results of work.
  • Coordinate analytical work to define and meet customer entitlements.
  • Develop and identify new technology, products, and service opportunities in energy conversion and storage.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrochemistry with a minimum of 7 years of experience in SOFC system development and testing.
  • Proven record of innovation in energy storage and conversion technologies, including solid oxide fuel or electrolysis cells.
  • Practical knowledge of safety practices related to experimental design and lab practices.
  • Demonstrated project execution experience and teamwork ability across all functions and levels.

Nice-to-haves

  • Expertise in mechanical system design and electrochemistry testing for SOFC and SOEC devices and stacks.
  • Experience at a commercial solid oxide cell manufacturer or government research facility in solid oxide fuel cells or electrolysis cells.
  • Demonstrated history of project leadership, publications, and IP generation in solid oxide fuel and/or electrolysis cells.
  • Strong data analytical skills and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
