About the position

The Lead Sound Engineer at Alley Theatre is responsible for the safe installation and operation of audio and video elements for all productions and events. This role involves hands-on supervision, production planning, and ensuring the functionality of the Sound Shop. The Lead Sound Engineer collaborates with the Sound Director to maintain high standards in sound engineering and contributes to the overall artistic excellence of the theatre.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the installation and operation of audio and video elements for productions and events.
  • Participate in production planning and documentation of audio, video, and communication systems.
  • Ensure day-to-day functionality of the Sound Shop, including equipment repairs and maintenance.
  • Supervise and assist in load-ins, strikes, and technical rehearsals for productions.
  • Run sound for shows and special events as assigned by the Sound Director.
  • Maintain departmental inventories of audio, video, and computer equipment.
  • Assist in hiring and supervising over-hire staff for productions.
  • Track and update departmental safety data sheets and maintain safety equipment.

Requirements

  • Experience leading teams and following instructions effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to collaborate and support co-workers as a team.
  • Detail-oriented with strong prioritization and multi-tasking skills.
  • Self-directed with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Advanced skills with Dante audio and control networking practices.
  • Experience programming and operating Yamaha consoles; DigiCo experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Vectorworks, Qlab, Mainstage, Ableton, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Filemaker Pro is a plus.
  • Commitment to learning about historical and institutional racism in American theatre.
