About the position

The Lead Sound Engineer at Alley Theatre is responsible for the hands-on supervision of audio and video elements for all productions and events. This role involves collaborating with the Sound Director in production planning, ensuring the functionality of the Sound Shop, and overseeing equipment maintenance and repairs. The Lead Sound Engineer plays a crucial role in maintaining high standards of sound quality and safety practices within the theatre.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in company and departmental meetings of the Sound Department as assigned by the Sound Director.
  • Represents the theatre's technical resources for various programs and events.
  • Plans and executes the technical aspects of each production's design in coordination with the Sound Show Lead.
  • Produces and maintains documentation for audio, video, and communication systems.
  • Supervises and assists in load-ins, strikes, work calls, and technical rehearsals.
  • Completes final pre-quiet time system checks for sound systems.
  • Supervises and performs equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Maintains departmental inventories of audio and video equipment.
  • Coordinates purchasing and receiving of necessary parts and supplies with the Sound Director.
  • Serves as a backup for sound engineers when needed.
  • Runs sound for shows and special events as assigned.
  • Reviews Stage Management Performance Reports and addresses equipment issues.
  • Assists in maintaining order and cleanliness of departmental workspaces.
  • Tracks and updates departmental SDS sheets and maintains safety equipment.
  • Works with the Sound Director to recommend capital investment areas.
  • Performs all work with attention to detail and safety practices.

  • Advanced skills with Dante audio and control networking practices.
  • Able to program and operate Yamaha consoles; experience with DigiCo consoles is a plus.
  • Skill with Vectorworks, Qlab, Mainstage, Ableton, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Filemaker Pro is a plus.
  • Understanding of historical and institutional racism in American theatre.
