About the position
As a Lead Substation Design Electrical Engineer at Black & Veatch, you will play a pivotal role in the design and implementation of substation projects, which encompass distribution, subtransmission, and transmission level voltage classes. This position requires you to function as a technical lead, overseeing the physical design and protective relaying/control aspects of substation engineering. You will be actively involved in project management, including scheduling and resource planning, while interfacing directly with clients, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure project success. Your responsibilities will also include conducting quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on projects and mentoring junior engineers to foster their professional growth. This hybrid position is based in Tualatin, OR, and candidates are expected to commute to the office three times a week while working remotely for the remaining two days. The ideal candidate will be located near the Portland/Vancouver metro area, although those willing to relocate will also be considered. As part of the Energy & Process business at Black & Veatch, you will contribute to innovative energy solutions that meet the rapidly changing infrastructure needs in generation, storage, transmission, and distribution of electric power. Your work will support the company's vision of sustainable solutions, particularly in the areas of substations, overhead and underground transmission lines, and renewables integration. In this role, you will be expected to stay current with departmental design guides, standards, and applicable engineering codes, applying this knowledge to ensure compliance with Black & Veatch's quality program. You will prepare complex engineering deliverables, conduct research for equipment and materials selection, and manage project budgets, schedules, and quality requirements. Additionally, you will coordinate with internal and external team members on moderately complex projects, ensuring that client interests are identified and addressed throughout the project lifecycle. Your expertise will be recognized as you design complete projects of moderate complexity and assist in the mentoring and development of junior staff.
Responsibilities
- Function as a technical lead substation design engineer, overseeing physical design and protective relaying/control.
- Perform substation design including distribution, subtransmission, and transmission level voltage classes.
- Actively participate in management, project scheduling, and work/resource planning meetings.
- Interface directly with clients, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure project success.
- Conduct QA/QC on projects and mentor junior engineers.
- Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables and perform complex research for equipment/materials selection.
- Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements for projects.
- Plan and conduct independent evaluations, selections, and adaptations of engineering techniques and procedures.
- Coordinate with internal/external team members on moderately complex projects.
- Assist with identifying key client interests and drivers on less complex projects.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
- Minimum of 5 years related work experience in substation design.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
- Intermediate knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards.
- Strong written communication skills and ability to drive for results.
