About the position

The Lead Surgical Technologist at Houston Methodist serves as a clinical expert and resource for Surgical Technology staff, ensuring safe patient care and assisting in the development of team skills and knowledge. This role involves anticipating the needs of the surgical team, reporting patient issues, and participating in the training and evaluation of Surgical Techs. The position emphasizes effective communication, critical thinking, and teamwork to enhance patient outcomes and departmental efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a clinical resource and expert for Surgical Technology staff.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and nursing staff during surgical procedures.
  • Participate in the selection, training, education, and evaluation of the Surgical Tech team.
  • Validate competencies of Surgical Techs prior to release from orientation.
  • Provide structured feedback and mentorship to team members.
  • Prepare the operating room, equipment, and supplies for procedures.
  • Support the physician during surgical procedures and assist with instrument care post-surgery.
  • Report observed variances in practices to department management.
  • Participate in quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
  • Collaborate with management to implement protocols and objectives.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program or military training equivalency.
  • Five years of experience as a Surgical Technologist, with three years as a clinical resource in surgical specialty service lines.
  • Experience in a service line team lead or preceptor role.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification.
  • CSA - Certified Surgical Assistant or equivalent certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in multiple surgical specialty service lines.
  • Proficiency in medical terminology.
  • Ability to manage complex clinical and interpersonal situations.
