Responsibilities
The Surgical Technologist in addition to the duties of a Nursing Assistant performs approved nursing tasks and technical procedures under the direction and supervision of Professional Registered Nurse.
Assists in receiving and transporting patients. Participates in the observation of patient conditions and promptly reports changes to the responsible nurse.Responds promptly to the needs of patient, refers patient/family requests or concerns appropriately. Demonstrates competence in patient care procedures and technical skills appropriate to the clinical area and needs of the patient population served.
Maintains a safe environment for patients and applies appropriate precautions and protocols; maintains and properly utilizes equipment. Participates in the orientation of personnel to the unit. Participates in continuing education to meet established requirements and for own job development. Prepares surgical case set up, instruments and supplies; is aware of physician preferences and anticipates needs during surgery. Maintains correct count of sponges, needles and instruments with circulating nurse before, during and prior to closure of surgical site.Notifies circulator of all specimens and assists in care of specimens. Assists in the application of dressings. Assists circulator/surgical team when not scrubbed. Prepares surgical suite for surgery, obtains needed equipment and supplies before, during and after procedure.
Assists in transport and positioning of patient. Performs surgical preps. Cleans and stocks rooms. Checks expiration dates on all sterile items. Assists in cleaning, storage and preparation of instruments for sterilization. Assist in orientation and mentoring new technicians, may perform real time in-service. May assist with ordering supplies for the departmentDemonstrates knowledge and practice of stock rotation when restocking shelves to facilitate the first-in/first out inventory control system. Organize the shelf before restocking new products. Communicate with store room to ensure all supplies are ordered and available at all times.

Qualifications
Certified Surgical Technician or certified eligible required. HS Diploma or equivalent required. Current BLS. experience preferred.
