About the position

The Lead Tax Accountant position at QBE The Americas is a critical role focused on managing and overseeing state income tax processes, ensuring compliance with corporate tax laws, and supporting federal tax operations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of tax regulations and will be responsible for tax research, return preparation oversight, and quarterly tax provisioning, with a particular emphasis on state income tax. This role also involves collaboration with various teams and the implementation of process improvements to enhance efficiency within the tax function.

Responsibilities

  • Review and oversee state income tax provision processes, including updates to apportionment and reviewing tax calculations.
  • Review quarterly state estimates and income tax extensions.
  • Develop strategies and tax planning opportunities.
  • Research state income tax implications of corporate transactions and summarize findings in audit-ready formats.
  • Collaborate with onshore and offshore teams to manage compliance and reporting calendars.
  • Manage state return to provision processes and finalize year-end reconciliations.
  • Handle state tax authority audits and related information requests.
  • Prepare analysis, modeling, and tax deliverables related to new tax laws and technical matters.
  • Review income tax returns and workpapers for P&C insurance and non-insurance companies.
  • Support the quarterly federal tax provision process under AIFRS17 and US Local STAT, including book to tax reconciliations.
  • Champion process improvement by evaluating current processes and implementing new procedures.
  • Collaborate with internal audit to assess the effectiveness of internal controls and assist in implementing corrective actions.
  • Support team member development through training sessions and knowledge sharing.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of corporate state and local income tax laws and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with tax research and oversight of return preparation.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively and independently.
  • Detail-oriented with high degree of tax and financial acumen.
  • Experience with Corptax Compliance for Tax Returns, Oracle Fusion, and Oracle Tax Compliance and Reporting Solution.
  • Proven ability to adapt to and drive process improvements using digital tools.
