About the position

The primary purpose of the Lead Transportation Assistant (Personal Property) position is to oversee and lead a team of Transportation Assistants in providing essential services and support related to call center operations, billing, shipping, and storage for Department of Defense (DoD) and U.S. Coast Guard customers. This role is situated within a large regionalized Joint Personal Property Shipping Office, specifically located at Lackland Air Force Base, TX. The position is permanent and full-time, with a salary range of $55,068 to $71,587 per year, classified under the GS-8 pay scale. The Lead Transportation Assistant will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of shipping and storage of goods, ensuring that the team meets the objectives and goals set forth by the agency. In this role, the Lead Transportation Assistant will communicate assignments to team members, explain team goals, and provide coaching and observation of their activities. The position requires interpreting guidelines and instructions to resolve customer concerns and prioritizing workflow tasks effectively. The Lead Transportation Assistant will also estimate or validate charges related to handling services, temporary storage, third-party services, mileage rates, and accessorial services. Additionally, the role involves conducting statistical samplings and audits to ensure program oversight of the commercial industry, prioritizing actionable tasks to enhance service delivery. The position may require occasional travel, and while telework is eligible as determined by agency policy, the role is not remote. The employee may also be required to work outside of normal duty hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on operational needs. This position does not have supervisory status, but it does involve leading a team and ensuring compliance with transportation rules and procedures governing entitlements and documentation requirements for domestic or foreign shipments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a team of Transportation Assistants, communicating assignments and team goals.
  • Coordinate all aspects of shipping and storage of goods for DoD and U.S. Coast Guard customers.
  • Interpret guidelines and instructions to resolve customer concerns and prioritize workflow tasks.
  • Estimate or validate charges related to handling services, temporary storage, and third-party services.
  • Conduct statistical samplings and audits to ensure program oversight of commercial industry operations.

Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level or equivalent in other pay systems.
  • Knowledge of transportation rules, procedures, and operations governing entitlements and documentation requirements for shipments.
  • Ability to interpret and apply transportation and traffic management regulations, policies, and directives from all branches of the armed forces.
  • Experience with automated systems to reconcile errors and provide subject-matter assistance in developing automated transportation procedures.
  • Knowledge of commercial carrier tariffs, shipping practices, and various shipment modes.
