About the position

The Learning Scientist in Efficacy Research at Duolingo is responsible for leading and collaborating on research efforts that evaluate the effectiveness of Duolingo courses. This role involves analyzing large datasets to gain insights that inform the learning experience, managing external research collaborations, and sharing findings with various audiences. The position offers an opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment with a focus on language learning and assessment, contributing to the mission of making education universally available.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or collaborate on research efforts evaluating the effectiveness of Duolingo courses.
  • Analyze in-app data to gain insights that inform the Duolingo learning experience.
  • Share findings with internal teams and external audiences through presentations, reports, white papers, and journal manuscripts.
  • Manage external research collaborations, guiding projects from proposal to final deliverables.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in linguistics, applied linguistics, cognitive science, or a related field.
  • Strong skills in statistics and data visualization.
  • Proficiency in R or Python, with the ability to quickly learn SQL or other data tools for handling large datasets.
  • Expertise in language acquisition, processing, or assessment, including quantitative methods and writing research reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience building computational models of human language learning or processing.
  • Industry experience, especially in EdTech.
  • A passion for language learning and knowledge of a language other than English.
