About the position

The East Brook Middle School Art Teacher position includes teaching art to students in Grades 5-8, including inclusive classes. The Art Teacher will be responsible for sourcing art supplies, preparing lessons, and providing developmentally appropriate instruction on art techniques, ensuring all learners interact in a supportive and respectful manner. The Art Teacher will be responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; and support the discovery and development of talents of students in the field of art.

Responsibilities

  • Builds a school and classroom culture in which students love and appreciate art demonstrated through hands-on expressive projects.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of established NJSLS and district curriculum goals.
  • Engages students in the creative process and cultivates their talents while deepening students' knowledge and understanding of the elements of art, principles of design, aesthetic concepts and appreciations, and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
  • Knows and can apply elements of design and modern principles of art. Knows the fundamentals and different approaches to drawing and multi-media techniques.
  • Evaluate each student's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepare progress reports.
  • Implements a variety of teaching and assessment techniques (including formative and summative) to ensure student achievement and engagement.
  • Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.
  • Collaborates regularly with the Pre-k-Grade 12 Visual Art professional learning community to promote cohesiveness and unity within the art department.
  • Plan, organize, facilitate, and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students' work for the school and the community including student art shows, art competitions, and local art opportunities such as Youth Art Month and arts festivals.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs, such as after school art club.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by Administration.

Requirements

  • New Jersey Teacher of Art, K-12 certification.
  • Proficient in Google Classroom.
  • Active participation in curriculum development and PLC work.
  • New Jersey resident or willingness to relocate.
  • Controlled substance testing and successful completion of criminal history background check are required of all applicants offered employment.
