About the position

The Lecturer position at the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Language Institute (MEDLI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison involves teaching Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish in an intensive summer language program. The role requires instructors to prepare course materials, engage with students primarily in the target language, and participate in various pedagogical activities. The position is for the summer session of 2025, running from June 9 to August 8, and is conducted in an online format.

Responsibilities

• Teach Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish at various levels in an eight-week intensive format.
• Prepare syllabus, course goals, lesson plans, and teaching materials.
• Develop, administer, and grade assignments and exams; maintain student learning management system on Canvas.
• Hold scheduled office hours and provide additional support to students as needed.
• Supervise any assigned Faculty Assistant or Teaching Assistant.
• Collaborate with program staff for course observations and evaluations.
• Advise on cultural programming and assist in co-curricular activities.
• Participate in pedagogy workshops and instructor meetings.

Requirements

• Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish language and culture.
• Preferred two years of college/university teaching experience in the US or abroad.
• Familiarity with current issues in language pedagogy and experience in intensive summer language teaching preferred.
• Experience with remote teaching and technology in foreign language instruction is strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in teaching Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish as a second language.
• Familiarity with ACTFL proficiency standards.
