About the position

The Lecturer position at the South Asia Summer Language Institute (SASLI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison involves teaching South Asian languages in an intensive eight-week program. The role requires instructors to deliver courses primarily in an online format, with a commitment to using the target language for at least 90% of classroom interactions. Instructors will prepare course materials, assess student performance, and contribute to a supportive learning environment while collaborating with other faculty and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Teach one South Asian language at the elementary, intermediate, or advanced level in an eight-week intensive format.
  • Prepare syllabus, determine course goals and objectives, and create lesson plans and teaching materials.
  • Communicate at least 90% in the target language during interactions with students.
  • Develop, administer, and grade classroom and home assignments and exams; maintain student learning management system (LMS) on Canvas.
  • Hold scheduled office hours a minimum of 2 hours per week and provide additional time for students upon request.
  • Supervise the Faculty Assistant or Teaching Assistant assigned to the section, if applicable.
  • Collaborate with other instructors and program staff to prepare for course observations and performance evaluations.
  • Advise on cultural programming and help prepare and implement institute co-curricular activities, no more than one a week.
  • Participate in all pedagogy workshops and instructor meetings organized by WISLI and individual institutes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in South Asian or Area Studies, Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or a related field.
  • Fluency or near-native fluency in the language being taught and in English.
  • Preferred: Two years of college/university experience in teaching a South Asian Language as a second language.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of current issues in language pedagogy and training in language proficiency.
  • Experience with remote teaching and technology in foreign language.
