About the position

The Legal Advocate position at Jersey Battered Women's Service, Inc (JBWS) is a part-time role focused on providing legal advocacy and support to individuals affected by domestic violence. The advocate will assist clients in navigating legal processes, ensuring they understand their rights under the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act, and will work collaboratively to meet the diverse needs of marginalized communities. This role emphasizes empowerment, advocacy for social reform, and a commitment to inclusivity and justice.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal information around the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act (PDVA) and related statutes to individuals.
  • Assist survivors in filing complaints and/or attending court/legal proceedings.
  • Provide advocacy relevant to individual needs and assist clients in making informed decisions.
  • Accompany survivors to legal proceedings.
  • Plan and assist in the implementation of educational legal information sessions.
  • Document statistics related to clients serviced.
  • Establish and maintain a professional demeanor in court and with court staff.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work under pressure and respond appropriately to crisis and stressful situations.
  • Actively contribute to a positive team environment and provide the collaboration needed for high-quality services to survivors.
  • Participate in and contribute to a healthy work environment and positive agency morale.

Requirements

  • BA in Social Work or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of three years providing case management services.
  • Fluent bilingual English/Spanish ability including verbal, written, and reading preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with community partners including court personnel.
  • Excellent organizational, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Culturally aware and sensitive to challenges faced particularly in marginalized populations.
  • Candidates with 40-hour domestic violence training preferred; however, candidates without training must complete 40-hours of domestic violence training upon hire provided and paid for by the agency.
