The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is seeking a dedicated individual for the position of Legal Assistant 1 in the Central Region, specifically within the Department of Human Services. The BHA is responsible for receiving, processing, conducting, and adjudicating administrative appeals and hearings in a manner that is fair, unbiased, and timely, adhering to both state and federal regulations. As a Legal Assistant 1, your primary responsibilities will include performing legal clerical work, which encompasses the processing and scheduling of appeals and fair hearings related to actions taken by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and the Department of Aging. You will be tasked with reviewing and analyzing appeals to ensure compliance with procedural regulations, recommending the dismissal of non-compliant appeals, and reviewing correspondence and legal documents to ascertain the issues on appeal. Your role will also involve computing and adjusting priorities, providing reminders to Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) to facilitate the timely processing of appeals, and determining which parties need to be notified regarding hearings, withdrawals, reschedules, and dispositions of appeals. In addition to these tasks, you will have the opportunity to identify inconsistencies and errors in adjudications, bringing your findings to the attention of your supervisor or the assigned ALJ. You will also analyze appeals for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) and request translations of documents as necessary. This position not only requires strong organizational skills but also a commitment to ensuring that all legal processes are followed accurately and efficiently. The work schedule for this position is full-time, with hours from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, including a 60-minute lunch break. There may be opportunities for part-time telework after successfully completing the required probationary or training period, provided you have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location within Pennsylvania.
