About the position

The Office of the Defender General is seeking a self-motivated and dependable candidate to fill a limited service Legal Assistant I position that will run through June 30th, 2026. This position will be providing administrative support for our busy Chittenden County Public Defender's Office as well as data entry in our case management system for our Central Office in Montpelier. The Legal Assistant I position is an integral part of the office, requiring patience and the ability to work with a wide variety of people, including those with difficult personalities. Responsibilities will include entering caseload data into the case management system, drafting legal documents and correspondence, and performing other administrative tasks as needed. Prior administrative or secretarial experience is preferred, as the role demands a solid understanding of legal office practices and procedures, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and Adobe Acrobat DC.

Responsibilities

  • Entering caseload data into the case management system.
  • Drafting legal documents and correspondence.
  • Providing administrative support to the Chittenden County Public Defender's Office.
  • Maintaining records and ensuring compliance with departmental policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of legal and legal office practices and procedures.
  • Understanding of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to review legal documents and respond, advise, or seek guidance.
  • Familiarity with office management principles, including practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Experience with record maintenance procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and Adobe Acrobat DC.
  • Ability to compose letters, memoranda, and reports with minimal instructions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's degree or two or more years of full-time college coursework (or equivalent) AND two (2) years or more of experience performing legal administrative duties.
  • Bachelor's degree AND one (1) year or more of experience performing legal administrative duties.
  • Paralegal certification AND two (2) years or more of experience performing legal administrative duties.
  • High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of experience performing legal administrative duties.
