About the position

At USAA, we are on a mission to facilitate the financial security of millions of U.S. military members and their families. We are currently seeking a talented Legal Assistant for our Sacramento, CA staff counsel law office. As a dedicated Legal Assistant, you will provide essential support with legal work that is reviewed and approved by the supervising attorney. Your responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks including research, contract administration, document preparation, and trial preparation. The legal work you perform will vary depending on the practice area and specialty, which may include insurance, banking, investments, financial services, litigation, general corporate, ecommerce/marketing, government relations, or labor/employee relations. In this role, you will apply your proficient knowledge to support the investigative process of trials by gathering necessary documents and information for legal assignments. You will conduct research and analyze documents to prepare comprehensive reports of findings, evaluate risks associated with alternatives, and calculate potential liabilities while assessing the benefits and drawbacks of each option. You may also be responsible for drafting legal documents such as discovery responses, affidavits, motions, and contracts, ensuring that all documents are properly filed with regulatory authorities and courts. Your position will also involve preparing presentations and briefing materials on topics relevant to USAA's business, assembling documents, and creating visual aids to be used as exhibits. You will guide and serve as a resource to team members, oversee the management and maintenance of attorneys' files, and assist with various administrative tasks to ensure that all deadlines are met. Additionally, you will act as a liaison between attorneys and outside counsel, ensuring effective communication and information exchange. It is crucial that you identify, measure, monitor, and control risks associated with business activities in accordance with our risk and compliance policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance with legal work which is reviewed and approved by the supervising attorney.
  • Conduct research and analyze documents to prepare reports of findings and formulate alternatives.
  • Evaluate risk of alternatives and calculate costs of potential liability and assess benefits/drawbacks.
  • Prepare drafts of legal documents such as discovery responses, affidavits, motions, corporate minutes, contracts, and other legal documents.
  • File documents with regulatory authorities, courts, and other tribunals, and monitor their status.
  • Prepare presentations and briefing material on topics relevant to USAA business.
  • Assemble documents and prepare charts, graphs, and other visual aids to be used as exhibits.
  • Guide and serve as a resource to team members in the delivery of their work products.
  • Oversee management and maintenance of attorneys' files per the attorney's specifications.
  • Assist with administrative tasks including calendar responsibilities, check writing, copying, and handling mail as necessary.
  • Act as a liaison between attorney and outside counsel in the exchange of information.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of related experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 2 years of experience in legal support or related experience in a fast-paced and complex business environment.
  • Proficient knowledge of the function/discipline and demonstrated application of knowledge, skills, and abilities towards work products.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively in person, by e-mail, and telephone.
  • Strong ability to focus on details, demonstrate accuracy, and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five plus years of experience assisting attorneys in handling discovery, conducting legal research, drafting motions, and performing trial preparation at a personal injury insurance defense law firm in California.
  • Notary Public certification.
  • US military experience with skills related to specific MOS's.
