About the position

At USAA, we are seeking a dedicated Legal Assistant to support personal injury auto cases at our San Diego, CA staff counsel location. This role is crucial in assisting with various legal tasks that are reviewed and approved by the supervising attorney. The responsibilities include conducting research, managing contract administration, preparing legal documents, and assisting in trial preparation. The work performed may vary depending on the specific practice area, which could include insurance, banking, investments, financial services, litigation, general corporate matters, ecommerce/marketing, government relations, or labor/employee relations. As a Legal Assistant, you will apply your intermediate knowledge to support the investigative process of trials by gathering necessary documents and information for legal assignments. Collaboration with the team is essential, as you will conduct research, analyze documents, and prepare reports of findings while evaluating the risks and costs associated with potential liabilities. You may also assist in drafting legal documents such as discovery responses, affidavits, motions, corporate minutes, and contracts, ensuring that all filings with regulatory authorities and courts are completed accurately and timely. In addition to legal tasks, you will manage and maintain attorneys' files according to their specifications and assist with administrative duties, including calendar management to meet deadlines, check writing, and handling mail. Acting as a liaison between attorneys and outside counsel will also be part of your responsibilities, ensuring effective communication and information exchange. You will play a vital role in identifying and managing risks associated with business activities in accordance with compliance policies and procedures. This position offers a flexible work environment, allowing you to work both at the staff counsel office and from home, although relocation assistance is not available for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing support for the investigative process of a trial by gathering documents and information for legal assignments.
  • Collaborate with the team to conduct research and analyze documents to prepare reports of findings and formulate alternatives.
  • Evaluate risk of alternatives and calculate costs of potential liability while assessing benefits and drawbacks.
  • Prepare drafts of legal documents such as discovery responses, affidavits, motions, corporate minutes, contracts, and other legal documents.
  • Assist with proper filing of documents with regulatory authorities and courts, monitor status, and distribute copies as needed.
  • Prepare presentations and briefing material on topics relevant to USAA business.
  • Manage and maintain attorneys' files per the attorney's specifications.
  • Assist with administrative tasks including calendar responsibilities, check writing, copying, and handling mail.
  • Act as a liaison between attorney and outside counsel in the exchange of information.
  • Collaborate with team members to resolve issues and identify appropriate issues for escalation.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma required.
  • 1 year of experience in legal support or related experience in a fast-paced and complex business environment.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the function/field and proven application of knowledge, skills, and abilities towards work products required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in person, by email, and telephone; ability to follow instructions from a diverse group of clients, attorneys, and staff.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five plus years of proven experience in the California legal system assisting attorneys in auto personal injury insurance defense litigation through trial.
  • Experience working in a staff counsel team setting.
  • Notary Public certification.
  • US military experience with skills related to one of the following MOS's: Navy (Legalman (LN)), Marines (4421, 4422, 4430), Army (27D/270A/42L), USAF (51JX / 5J0X1).
