About the position

The Legal Assistant position at USAA involves supporting personal injury auto cases in the San Diego staff counsel location. The role requires providing legal assistance under the supervision of an attorney, including research, document preparation, and trial preparation. The position offers a flexible work environment, allowing for a combination of office and remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing support for the investigative process of a trial by gathering documents and information for legal assignments.
  • Collaborate with the team to conduct research and analyze documents to prepare reports of findings and formulate alternatives.
  • Evaluate risk of alternatives and calculate costs of potential liability, assessing benefits and drawbacks.
  • Prepare drafts of legal documents such as discovery responses, affidavits, motions, and contracts.
  • Assist with proper filing of documents with regulatory authorities and courts, monitoring status and distributing copies.
  • Prepare presentations and briefing material on topics relevant to USAA business.
  • Manage and maintain attorneys' files per specifications.
  • Assist with administrative tasks including calendar responsibilities, check writing, and handling mail.
  • Act as a liaison between attorney and outside counsel in the exchange of information.
  • Collaborate with team members to resolve issues and identify appropriate issues for escalation.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma required.
  • 1 year of experience in legal support or related experience in a fast-paced environment.
  • Intermediate knowledge of the legal field and proven application of knowledge, skills, and abilities towards work products required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with clients, attorneys, and staff.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five plus years of experience in the California legal system assisting attorneys in auto personal injury insurance defense litigation through trial.
  • Experience working in a staff counsel team setting.
  • Notary Public certification.
  • US military experience related to legal roles.
