About the position

As a Legal Assistant (Court) for the Department of the Navy, you will play a crucial role in supporting legal proceedings within the RLSO Southwest in San Diego, CA. Your primary responsibilities will include monitoring and annotating events for all assigned digitally recorded general and special courts-martial, as well as other legal or quasi-legal proceedings. You will be tasked with preparing verbatim or summarized transcripts of these proceedings, ensuring accuracy and clarity in documentation. Additionally, you will be responsible for preparing and distributing all post-trial paperwork, including Results of Trial letters for convening authorities and confinement orders for accused individuals sentenced to confinement. Maintaining complete post-trial court files in an orderly fashion for future reference will also be part of your duties. You will attend weekly court-docketing meetings where military judges, trial counsel, and defense counsel review the scheduled courts-martial. This position requires a keen attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently. You will be expected to ensure that all necessary supplies and equipment are present in the courtroom, as well as arrange seating plans and name tags for court-martial members, attorneys, and military judges. Your role is vital in ensuring that the legal process runs smoothly and that all documentation is handled with the utmost professionalism and accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and annotate events for all assigned digitally recorded general and special courts-martial and other legal proceedings.
  • Prepare verbatim or summarized transcripts of court proceedings as appropriate.
  • Accurately prepare and distribute all post-trial paperwork, including Results of Trial letters and confinement orders.
  • Maintain complete post-trial court files in an orderly fashion for future reference.
  • Attend weekly court-docketing meetings with military judges, trial counsel, and defense counsel to review scheduled courts-martial.
  • Ensure proper supplies and equipment are present in the courtroom and arrange seating plans and name tags for court-martial members, attorneys, and military judges.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
  • Specialized experience includes capturing recordings of court proceedings, preparing and proofreading trial exhibits, maintaining post-trial court files, and providing clerical support within an organization.
  • Ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
