About the position

The City of Yakima is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Legal Assistant II for our Prosecution Division. This full-time position is essential in supporting our attorneys with various legal tasks, including managing case files, preparing legal documents, and performing procedural tasks. The ideal candidate will have a passion for criminal law and public service, and will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the legal processes within the City Attorney's Office. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing, organizing, reviewing, and filing a variety of legal pleadings such as trial briefs, motions, orders, judgments, and subpoenas. You will maintain records and files of Municipal Court cases and appeals, ensuring that all necessary materials are secured for evidence. Additionally, you will interact with the public, defendants, victims, and attorneys, providing information and addressing inquiries regarding pending prosecution cases. Your ability to communicate effectively and professionally will be vital in this position. As a Legal Assistant II, you will also draft and process various legal forms and documents, ensuring they are completed accurately and within legally mandated time frames. You will be expected to work independently, demonstrating sound judgment and problem-solving skills while adhering to confidentiality standards. Your contributions will enhance the effectiveness of the Legal Department and the City government, as you strive to improve operations and provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, organize, review, and file a variety of legal pleadings such as trial briefs, motions, and subpoenas.
  • Maintain records and files of Municipal Court cases and appeals, ensuring all necessary materials are secured for evidence.
  • Receive, screen, and answer inquiries from the public, defendants, victims, and attorneys regarding pending prosecution cases.
  • Draft, prepare, and process a variety of legal forms and documents, ensuring proper completion within legally mandated time frames.
  • Proofread and edit legal documents to ensure accuracy and completeness, correcting errors and omissions as necessary.
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of the Legal Department by demonstrating cooperation and efficient use of resources.
  • Interpret and explain information to the Spanish-speaking public as needed, if certified bilingual/biliterate.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years of paralegal and/or legal assistant experience in civil/criminal litigation, municipal law, or direct support of an attorney.
  • OR one (1) year of paralegal, legal assistant, or legal administrative support experience PLUS legal certification(s) such as Professional Legal Assistant (PLS) or Certified Paralegal.
  • OR a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university PLUS one (1) year of professional clerical support experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver's License.
  • Ability to become bonded as a notary public of the State of Washington.
