About the position

The Legal Assistant III position at the Court of Appeals involves performing complex legal tasks under the supervision of court officials. The role includes researching, analyzing, and drafting appellate documents, assisting with case management, and handling various administrative duties. The position requires independent judgment and initiative, as well as the ability to support the appellate judiciary effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and analyze legal sources for appellate processes.
  • Compile citations and references for legal documents.
  • Check citations, quotations, footnotes, and references for accuracy.
  • Prepare appellate judgments and orders.
  • Forward published opinions to national publishers for publication.
  • Review legal documents for correctness.
  • Assemble exhibits, affidavits, and other documents for appellate records.
  • File appellate documents and maintain case management systems.
  • Assist assigned chambers with administrative and clerical support.
  • Preview correspondence and screen calls for assigned judges.
  • Supervise others and perform related work as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in law or a related field is preferred.
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience as a paralegal, legal secretary, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of legal terminology, research methods, and techniques.
  • Experience in the preparation and use of appellate documents and court procedures.
  • Skill in conducting legal research and legal editing.
  • Excellent word processing and proofreading skills, including knowledge of the Bluebook and Texas Rules of Form.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with case management systems.
  • Familiarity with Texas Supreme Court procedures.
