About the position

The Legal Assistant (Office Automation) position at the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys and the Office of the U.S. Attorneys in Houston, TX, is a full-time, permanent role designed to support Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by providing a variety of legal assistance and office support services. The selected candidate will receive formal and/or on-the-job training as needed, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle the responsibilities of the position. At the full performance level, the Legal Assistant will be responsible for examining, preparing, and processing a variety of technical legal documents, including complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels. The role also involves proofreading and cite-checking legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with legal standards. Additionally, the Legal Assistant will assist attorneys in trial preparation by conducting non-complex research of litigation, statutes, regulations, and court cases, as well as assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents necessary for court proceedings. The position requires maintaining an organized calendar of assigned active cases, tracking filing, hearing, and trial dates, and scheduling conferences and interviews. The Legal Assistant will also be responsible for arranging travel by preparing itineraries and securing transportation and hotel reservations. The role demands proficiency in producing a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications. As the Legal Assistant gains experience, responsibilities will increase, and assignments will become more complex, providing opportunities for professional growth and development.

Responsibilities

  • Examine, prepare, and process a variety of technical legal documents, including complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels.
  • Proofread and cite-check legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents.
  • Assist attorneys in trial preparation by conducting non-complex research of litigation, statutes, regulations, and court cases.
  • Assemble exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents for court proceedings.
  • Organize files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository.
  • Maintain a calendar of assigned active cases and track filing, hearing, and trial dates.
  • Schedule conferences and interviews as needed.
  • Arrange travel by preparing itineraries and securing transportation and hotel reservations.
  • Produce a variety of written documents and materials using office software applications.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Typing speed of at least 40 words per minute with three or fewer errors.
  • For GS-6: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level, including reviewing legal documents for completeness and using automated software to produce legal reports.
  • For GS-7: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level, including providing trial support to attorneys and preparing legal documents accurately.

Nice-to-haves
