About the position

The Legal Assistant position within the Civil Legal Support Section of the Northern District of Indiana offers an exciting opportunity to provide legal and administrative support to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs). This role is essential in ensuring the effective enforcement of federal laws and the protection of citizens' rights. The position involves a variety of tasks, including preparing legal documents, assisting in trial preparations, and maintaining case files, all while working in a collaborative environment dedicated to justice.

Responsibilities

  • Examine, prepare, and process a variety of technical legal documents, including complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, and subpoenas.
  • Assist attorneys in trial preparation by assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents.
  • Organize files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository.
  • Maintain a calendar of assigned active cases and track filing, hearing, and trial dates.
  • Schedule conferences and interviews, and arrange travel by preparing itineraries and securing transportation and hotel reservations.
  • Produce a variety of written documents and materials using office software applications.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • At least one year of specialized experience reviewing legal documents for accuracy and completeness, or completion of four years of education above high school level, or a combination of experience and education.
  • Typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute with three or fewer errors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a legal environment or with legal documentation is preferred.
  • Familiarity with automated software for producing legal documents and reports.
