About the position

The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking a Legal Assistant (Office Automation) to support Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) in both the Financial Litigation Division and Criminal Division. This position is essential for providing a variety of legal assistance and office support services. The selected candidate will receive formal and/or on-the-job training as needed, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle the responsibilities of the role. The Legal Assistant will be involved in examining, preparing, and processing a variety of technical legal documents, including complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels. Attention to detail is crucial, as the role requires proofreading and cite-checking legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents to ensure accuracy and completeness. In addition to document preparation, the Legal Assistant will assist attorneys in trial preparation by conducting non-complex research of litigation, statutes, regulations, and court cases. This includes assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents, as well as organizing files and records for disposition or transfer to a records depository. The role also involves maintaining a calendar of assigned active cases, tracking filing, hearing, and trial dates, and scheduling conferences and interviews. The Legal Assistant will be responsible for arranging travel by preparing itineraries and securing transportation and hotel reservations. As the individual gains experience, responsibilities will increase, and assignments will become more complex, providing opportunities for professional growth within the Department of Justice.

Responsibilities

  • Examine, prepare, and process a variety of technical legal documents, including complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels.
  • Proofread and cite-check legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist attorneys in trial preparation by conducting non-complex research of litigation, statutes, regulations, and court cases.
  • Assemble exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents for trial use.
  • Organize files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository.
  • Maintain a calendar of assigned active cases and track filing, hearing, and trial dates.
  • Schedule conferences and interviews as needed.
  • Arrange travel by preparing itineraries and securing transportation and hotel reservations.
  • Produce a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications.

Requirements

  • Must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute with three or fewer errors.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level, or four years of education above the high school level, or a combination of both.
  • Specialized experience includes reviewing legal documents for accuracy, maintaining file systems, and obtaining needed information from files or general reference sources.

Nice-to-haves
