About the position

The Legal Assistant position at the Law Offices of Paul D. Scott and Law Offices of Yasmine S. Mehmet offers a unique opportunity to work within a boutique whistleblower firm and an established family law practice. This role is ideal for a paralegal student or a legal secretary who is eager to deepen their understanding of legal practices and the operational aspects of managing a small law firm. The position is full-time, requiring a commitment from Monday to Friday, with a standard work schedule from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The successful candidate will engage in a variety of tasks that support the legal team and enhance the firm's efficiency. In this role, the Legal Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the preparation of legal documents, which includes drafting, editing, and formatting. The candidate will coordinate with couriers and court clerks to ensure the timely filing and service of legal documents. Additionally, the Legal Assistant will create, organize, and maintain both paper and electronic files, as well as trial binders. The position also involves conducting occasional investigative and research work as requested by attorneys, answering calls, and serving as the first point of contact for prospective and current clients, court staff, and other attorneys. Other responsibilities include assisting with payables and receivables, updating the firm's web and social media platforms, and performing various administrative tasks as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparation of legal documents including drafting, editing, and formatting.
  • Coordinate with couriers and court clerks to ensure timely filing and service of legal documents.
  • Create, organize, and maintain paper and electronic files and trial binders.
  • Conduct occasional investigative and research work upon attorney's request.
  • Answer calls and serve as the first point of contact with prospective and current clients, court staff, and other attorneys.

  • Update web and social media platforms.
  • Perform other miscellaneous administrative tasks.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and strong time management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Professional and positive attitude.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Prior office and typing experience.
  • Self-directed and able to work without strict supervision.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Willingness to learn other programs such as Quickbooks, Dropbox, Docusign, Relativity, and legal research programs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with social media.
  • Having a driver's license.
